What Is a uPVC Door Mechanism?

The mechanism is the lock inside the edge of your door, often called the gearbox or centre case. When you lift the handle and turn the key, it moves the hooks and bolts along the door edge into the frame. When it fails, the door may not lock, or it may lock and then refuse to open.

How Do You Know Your uPVC Door Mechanism Has Failed?

  • The key turns but nothing happens
  • The handle feels loose, floppy or does not spring back
  • You hear grinding or clicking when you lift the handle
  • You have to lift the handle and push the door to lock it
  • The door will not stay locked
  • The key is stiff or gets stuck

Do not keep forcing the handle. It often turns a small fault into a full lockout.

Repair or Replacement? We Check First

Not every problem is the mechanism. A loose handle may just need new handle replacement. A door that has dropped on its hinges strains a healthy lock, and worn hinges need hinge replacement. For a wider fault, see our uPVC door repairs.

We check the handle, hinges, alignment and cylinder before we recommend anything. If the mechanism has failed internally, we replace it, because gearboxes are normally replaced rather than repaired. If something else is causing the problem, we tell you and fix that instead.

How We Replace a uPVC Door Mechanism

  1. Inspect the door. We check the lock, handle, hinges and alignment together.
  2. Measure the mechanism. We check the backset, the spacing between the handle spindle and the cylinder, the faceplate length and the type of locking points, so the new mechanism matches.
  3. Fit the replacement. We remove the failed mechanism and fit the correct one.
  4. Test everything. We check the handle, key and every locking point before we leave.

Most repairs can be carried out the same day from our fully stocked van. Some doors need a specific part, and we tell you upfront if that is the case.

A Recent Job

A customer was struggling to lock their door. The fault was a failed centre case. We fitted a replacement mechanism along with a new euro cylinder with a thumbturn, and supplied five new keys.

Replace the Cylinder at the Same Time?

If the cylinder is old or worn, replacing it during the same visit saves a second call. We can fit a 3 star rated anti snap cylinder, which resists lock snapping. See our high security locks and lock replacement and upgrades services.

Locked Out Because the Mechanism Failed?

If a failed mechanism has locked you out, call us straight away. We use non destructive entry wherever possible, so your door and frame stay undamaged.

Mechanism Replacement for Landlords and Businesses

We work directly with landlords, letting agents and businesses. A door that will not lock is a security risk and a problem between tenancies. See our residential locksmith and commercial locksmith services.
